Buffalo Signs Andrew George

Buffalo has signed tight end Andrew George. The undrafted rookie free agent had 30 receptions for 408 yards and 5 touchdowns last season. The 6 – 5, 251 pound George played college ball at Brigham Young. He was released by Carolina in June. He joins J. P. Foschi who was signed this week to address the Bills tight end shortage.

The Bills have signed J. P. Foschi. He will provide depth to the depleted tight end corps. Derek Schouman and Joe Klopfenstein are out with injuries. Shawn Nelson was suspended by the league for the first 4 regular season games for substance abuse. The 6 – 4, 265 pound Foschi was released in March by the Bengals. Last year he had 27 receptions for 260 yards and 2 touchdowns. He has played under Buffalo head coach Chan Gailey with the Chiefs and Georgia Tech.

Nelson Suspended For Four Games

Bills tight end Shawn Nelson has been suspended for the first 4 regular season games. He can practice with the team and play in the remaining preseason games. The league cited substance abuse. Nelson had 17 receptions for 156 yards and a touchdown last year. He was drafted in the fourth round from Southern Mississippi.

Edwards Excels In Win Over Colts

Bills quarterback Trent Edwards excelled in the 34 – 21 win over the Colts. He was 5 of 8 for 93 yards and a 70 yard touchdown pass to Lee Evans. He solidifed his hold on the starting job. Backup Brian Brohm had a good night, going 14 of 21 for 125 yards. Rookie sensation C. J. Spiller had 10 carries for 54 yards, including a 31 yard touchdown run. Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning was 8 of 15 for 91 yards. He threw an interception that Terrence McGee returned 78 yards for a touchdown.

Bills To Play Colts At Rogers Centre

The Bills will play the Colts tonight at the Rogers Centre. It is part of the 5 year Bills Toronto Series, which provides for 5 regular season and 3 preseason games through 2012. The sponsor, Rogers Communications, has made 14,000 tickets available at prices under $100. The Series generates $9.75 million per game for the team, twice the gate in Buffalo. Peyton Manning, arguably the best quarterback in the NFL, is expected to see some playing time. The Series continues when the Bills host the Bears in November in Toronto.

David Nelson Injured In Practice

Bills wide receiver David Nelson suffered an Achilles tendon injury in practice. His outlook is unknown. The rookie free agent had an outstanding game against Washington, going for 5 receptions and a touchdown. He is likely to make the Buffalo roster. The 6 – 5, 217 pound Nelson played college ball at Florida.

Buffalo Signs Receiver Aaron Rhea

Buffalo has signed receiver Aaron Rhea. The undrafted rookie free agent was released by the Vikings. He had 1,811 career yards and 19 touchdowns at Stephen F. Austin University. The 6 – 0, 205 pound Rhea adds depth to the Bills receiving corps. Veteran James Hardy and rookie Marcus Easley are sidelined with injuries.

The Bills will sign running back Andre Anderson. The undrafted free agent will provide backup to the injured Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson. The 6 – 0, 212 pound Anderson is a graduate of Tulane. He had 1,966 career yards and 8 touchdowns. He was recently released by the Raiders.

Lynch, Jackson Out With Injuries

Buffalo running backs Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson are both out with injuries. Lynch hurt his ankle in the Redskins game. Jackson injured his hand and is likely to miss the preseason. While they recover, rookie C. J. Spiller will get more playing time. The Bills return to training camp Monday to prepare for a preseason game in Toronto on Thursday against the Colts.

Bills Lose Opener 42 – 17

The Bills lost the preseason opener 42 – 17 to the Redskins. Both teams debuted new head coaches, with Buffalo under Chan Gailey and Washington under Mike Shanahan. Quarterback Trent Edwards struggled, going 6 of 12 for 58 yards and an interception. Ryan Fitzpatrick went 9 of 14 for 61 yards and one touchdown. The running game was solid, with 18 carries for 146 yards and a touchdown. The Bills played their new 3 – 4 defense. Linebacker Donovan Woods had a standout evening with 6 tackles. It is too early to tell, but the team showed little improvement over last year.
